Dunnstown Recreation Reserve Pavilion Upgrade
- Completion Date20 December 2024
Background
The Dunnstown Recreation Reserve, home to the Dunnstown Football Netball Club and Dunnstown Cricket Club, has long been the heart and soul of the Dunnstown community, with its community centre/pavilion playing host to a multitude of community events and functions for many years.
While also housing change facilities for AFL, netball and cricket, the pavilion needs to be updated to bring the building into the 21st century.
In order to align with current AFL and cricket facility guidelines, Moorabool Shire Council, in partnership with the State and Federal governments, is upgrading and extending the facility so it is more accessible and inclusive to all genders.
The project
Council was successful in its Local Sports Infrastructure Fund (Round 2, Community Facilities) grant in 2022 and commenced construction early 2024 once funding was also sought from the Federal Government's Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program in 2023.
With ambulant toilets incorporated into the design for each change space and a complete removal of urinals and shower blocks (to be replaced with female friendly shower and toilet cubicles), this upgrade will help the clubs attract more participation opportunities in the form of female AFL and cricket teams, as well as be more user friendly for people of any gender part of the club or visiting.
It is the Dunnstown Football Netball Club’s desire to be able to recruit more female players so that a full female team can be established at this club. Having appropriate facilities available to help realise this goal will help promote the club to women and girls (and those of any gender) so they can feel welcome and valued.
The hot water units will be removed from the umpires’ room, providing more space to install shower cubicles and ambulant toilets, with the option of separating the space for umpires of different genders if required.
By further extending the building footprint, there are new opportunities created for participation, including:
- A gym for community/club use.
- A meeting room for existing Dunnstown Community Centre user groups to utilise, as well as club committee and wider community if required. This would open the hall space up for additional user groups to utilise the space on a regular basis.
- A first aid room for participants and community
- Additional storage space
- Improved player and umpire amenities
- Building access and service compliance improvements.
With upgraded facilities, it is hoped the Dunnstown Recreation Reserve will become a facility that can attract players/members from not just the Dunnstown community, but other parts of the Moorabool Local Government Area, and become a facility of choice for sporting codes and community.
