Visitors to the Moorabool region are often pleasantly surprised to discover mineral springs in the area.
Adjacent to the Bostock Reservoir, the small Ballan Mineral Reserve has spring water comparable to that of Hepburn Springs. A gravel parking area is bordered by picnic tables, overlooking the shady Moorabool River East Branch.
In 2023, Council commissioned two sculptures to support Indigenous interpretation of mineral springs sites. The aim was to reconnect the Ballan and Spargo Creek mineral springs sites with the Moorabool River, and to acknowledge Indigenous connection to these places.
You will find Brim Brim, one of the two sculptures, at the Ballan Mineral Reserve. Read more on the sculptures here.
Narrow walking tracks make their way down to the mineral spring tap, where more picnic tables, bench seating, and an undercover area is provided along the small, seasonal river. For those willing to find their way down the slope, they will be treated to views of the river valley lying close to the riverbed.
This spot is filled with butterflies during summer, and makes a great place for either a picnic lunch or a quick stop on the way to Bostock Reservoir.
