Thinking about adding another furry friend to your family?
Under Council’s Community Local Law, the maximum number of animals you can keep on your property without a permit depends on your land size.
You must also not keep more than four different types of animals on premises in a residential area at any one time, or any animal not listed below. If you are planning to add more than the maximum amount of animals for your property, you must apply for an additional animal permit.
The number of each type of animal you can keep on your property is set out below:

How to apply
What happens next?
Once you have submitted and paid for your additional animal permit:
- We will consider your application and may be in contact if we need further information.
- We will contact your neighbours to seek their feedback. This gives your neighbours the opportunity to advise whether they have any concerns regarding your application. This process takes approximately 4 weeks
- Applications will generally require a property inspection. A Council officer will contact you to arrange a suitable inspection day and time.
- Authorised officers may conduct ad hoc inspections at any time.
- If approved, your permit will be sent to you. If not approved, we will contact you. Please allow up to 6 weeks.
Permit changes
You must notify Council of any changes to the permit conditions including:
- Change in animal numbers (increase or decrease)
- Breed of animal
Excess Animal Permits are not transferrable. If you move or the details of any of the animals at the property change, you must re-apply and pay another permit fee.
If permit conditions are not complied with, permits can be revoked and additional animals will need to be removed from the property.
For further information please contact us to speak with a member of the Community Safety team.
