Cats that are allowed to roam outdoors, especially at night, can harm wildlife, cause accidents, get into fights, and even catch diseases.
Under the Domestic Animals Act cats are not allowed to trespass on other people’s property.
A cat curfew is also in place which means you must keep your cat/s contained to your property during the curfew times. For more information on the cat curfew visit the cat curfew page.
It is recommended cat owners consider purchasing or constructing a cat enclosure to ensure their cat is contained to their property.
To assist residents with nuisance or trespassing cats, Council provides a humane cat trap hire service. Cat traps can be hired from the Ballan or Darley Council Offices. For more information on cat traps see our cat trap page
If you have a trespassing or nuisance cat visiting your property, the first step we recommend is to talk to the cat owner. If after speaking with the owner you are still experiencing issues, you can report it.
