Use this A-Z recycling and waste guide to help you make the best decision when clearing out common items from the kitchen, garage and everywhere else in your home.

Many items can be recycled into new products, saving valuable resources, energy, and landfill space. A cost may be associated with some disposal or recycling services – contact the provider first to check.

Camera

- Reuse by selling, swapping, or giving away. Try eBay, Gumtree or local Buy Swap Sell pages.
- Contact your local Op Shop – find out if they accept working electronic items
- Recycle as e-waste at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (no cost)
- Never put any electronic item in a household bin, e-waste is banned from landfill and is a contaminant in the recycling bin.

Cans (steel or aluminium)

- Return eligible containers for a 10c refund through Victoria's Container Deposit Scheme
- Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- Reuse steel cans as plant pots or containers for storage, e.g. nails/screws etc.

Car batteries

- Recycle at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- Never put batteries in any bin – they can cause fires in the collection trucks

Car/auto parts

- Reuse by selling online or by giving away
- Recycle metal at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Contact a local scrap dealer to recycle a car body

Cardboard (unwaxed)

- Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station
- Large boxes are best taken to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station – don’t squash them into a bin as they can get stuck.
- Reuse by offering to someone who might be moving to a new house

Cardboard (waxed - e.g. fruit boxes)

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees may apply)
- Reuse by offering to someone who might be moving to a new house
- Avoid waxed cardboard if possible

Carpet/carpet underlay

Dispose of at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Cartridges (printer/toner)

Donate at any particpating stores:

- Australia Post
- Cartridge World

- The Good Guys
- JB-HiFi
- Office National

Cassette cover and casing (tape removed)

Cassette tapes

- Recycle at Green Collect (Braybrook)
- Reuse by donating to your local charity/op-shop

Cat litter

Wrap in old newspaper or plastic bag before disposal

Cat poo

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Wrap in old newspaper or plastic bag
- Recycle by using a Green Cone Solar Composter or EnsoPet Poo Composter

CD cases (plastic)

CD players

- Reuse by selling, swapping, or giving away. Try eBay, Gumtree or local Buy Swap Sell pages.
- Contact your local Op Shop – find out if they accept working electronic items

CDs

- Reuse by donating to your local charity/op-shop
- Reuse by stringing up in your garden to deter pests or for craft projects

Cellophane

Cement sheeting including asbestos

Not accepted in any kerbside bin or at any Moorabool Shire Transfer Station.

Ceramics

- Reuse by giving away or donating to your local charity/op-shop
- Broken ceramics can be used for creative art projects

Cereal box inner plastic bags

Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Cereal boxes

Recycle in your recycling bin (yellow lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station

Chemicals (farm chemicals and DrumMUSTER)

- Dispose of unwanted agricultural or non-household chemicals through ChemClear.
- Empty drums can be transferred at any Moorabool transfer station for free (see link for requirements)

Chemicals (household)

Donate through Sustainability Victoria's Detox Your Home events. Council runs one event per year.

Chux wipes

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Reuse until cannot be reused anymore – wash in washing machine to get more life out of them
- Avoid by using reusable cloths instead

Cigarette butts

Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Tip: When out and about, carry a container to collect butts until you find a bin. Cigarette butts persist in the natural environment for many years - never litter!

Cleaning rags

Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Avoid by using reusable rags instead

Cling wrap/cling film/plastic wrap

Use reusable containers or bees wax wraps instead

Clothing (damaged)

- Reuse as rags at home
- Recycle by donating to Southern Cross Recycling
- Recycle by sending to Upparel
- Donate to local mechanics
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Never donate damaged clothing to an Op Shop. If you won’t wear it why would someone else?

Clothing (good condition)

- Reuse by having a clothes swap with friends or selling online, at a market, etc
- Reuse quality items by donating to your local charity/op-shop or putting in a clothing/textile donation bin
- Recycle by dropping off at select clothing retailers - see H&M Group and Zara
- Recycle by sending to Upparel
- Recycle by donating to Southern Cross Recycling

Coat hangers (plastic or metal)

- Reuse by donating to your local charity/op-shop
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Coffee cups and lids (compostable)

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Sit in to have a coffee or carry a reusable cup if you’re on the go to avoid waste
- Use the cup as pot for seedlings
- Recycle the cup via a worm farm or compost bin

Coffee cups and lids (single use)

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Sit in to have a coffee or carry a reusable cup if you’re on the go to avoid waste
- Use the cup as pot for seedlings

Coffee filter papers

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Recycle by adding to soil to increase soil acidity
- Recycle via a worm farm, compost bin or Bokashi bin

Coffee grounds and beans

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Recycle by adding to soil to increase soil acidity
- Recycle via a worm farm, compost bin or Bokashi bin

Coffee pods

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)
- Avoid waste by using ground coffee or reusable/refillable, metal coffee pod
- Nespresso have recyclable coffee pods that can be dropped off at Bacchus Marsh Florist & Nursery
- Recycle through the Terracycle website. Search ‘pods’ to identify those you can recycle

Compostable Plates

- Recycle in your home compost bin or worm farm
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Computers, parts and accessories

- Reuse by selling, swapping, or giving away. Try eBay, Gumtree or local Buy Swap Sell pages.
- Contact your local Op Shop – find out if they accept working electronic items

Concrete

Concrete, rubble, construction, demolition and renovation waste is not accepted in any kerbside bin or at any Moorabool Shire Transfer Station.

Cooking oil

- For large quantities, search Recycling Near You for an oil collector.
- Never pour oil down the sink – it causes blockages.
- Small amounts of oil can be buried in the garden or put into home compost or Bokashi bin system

Corks (wine or bottle corks)

- Save and donate at any Moorabool Shire Council transfer station or office through our One Stop Drop program
- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Cotton wool balls

- Dispose in your garbage bin (red lid) or take to a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (fees apply)

Avoid waste by using reusable face cloth instead

Crockery

- Reuse by donating to your local charity/op-shop if in good condition

Curtain rods (metal)

- Reuse for garden/ vegie patch projects
- Recycle at a Moorabool Shire Transfer Station (no cost)

Curtains

Cutlery (cornstarch)

- Recycle in your home compost bin

Cutlery (plastic)

- Reuse by washing and reusing until no longer usable
